My views on Kenneth Branagh's movie,
'Hamlet':
· 1 How faithful is the movie to the original play?
1》Yes, the movie is faithful to the original play, because Branagh utilizes the entire script virtually word for word.
but,their are some notable changes:
Which is not clearly in the original text is a sex scene between Hamlet and Ophelia. which is used as a flashback at various points.
#Or In movie Hamlet was following his father's orders even though in the play he was not.
#Hamlet's father died in a tragic death,Shakespeare never clearly states the atmosphere and setting of where Claudius poisened his brother but,Branagh choose a clever way to show it.
· 2 After watching the movie, have your perception about play, characters or situations changed?
2》In the movie, The setting is much more modern than original.
In the movie version Gertude appears to truly care for her son and sees the horror of her choice and implies that she was marry after the first husband's death.
In the text Gertude interpreted as a unfaithful woman, who wanted to be with her brother in law, while she was still married woman.
· 3 Do you feel ‘aesthetic delight’ while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?
3》Yes,i felt aesthetic delight, when Hamlet completed his revenge with his Uncle.
· 4 Do you feel ‘catharsis’ while or after watching movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?
4》Yes, i feel catharsis for Hamlet..
Hamlet's soliloquy "TO BE OR NOT TO BE" in act 3,scene 1..or in the end,Hamlet was died.. so i feel sad.
· 5 Does screening of movie help you in better understanding of the play?
5》Yes, because Kenneth Branagh's this movie version based on original text. And once we are watching something it becomes clear for us to understanding.
· 6 Was there any particular scene or moment in the movie that you will cherish lifetime?
6》No there were not any particular scene or moments in the movie that i will cherish lifetime.
· 7 If you are director, what changes would you like to make in the remaking of movie on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’?In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of King Hamlet out side the Elsinore castle. The movie ends with the similar sequence wherein the statue of the King Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of symbolism do you read in this? (Clue: In Book IX of'Paradise Lost', Satan reflects on his revenge motive: "But what will not ambition andrevenge; Descend to?
7》If i am director, i would like to made movie like Hamlet would have married Ophelia and they would have beem happy together..
Or Shakespeare had chosen to have Claudius tell the people of Denmark that King Hamlet had been killed by Snake...The Snake is perfect symbol of Claudius. Even since the beginning of time Snakes have been viewed as Evil because of the story of ADAM & EVE. God told Adam and Eve to not eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge.. while Satan wants to take Revenge with God, Satan convinced Eve to eat the fruit.
. 8 Who aspires must down as low; As high he soared, obnoxious, first or last, To basest things. Revenge, at first though sweet, Bitter ere long back on itself recoils." Is it not King Hamlet's ambition to avenge his death responsible for the downfall of his kingdom which is symbolically pictured in last scenes?)
8》King Hamlet wanted to Revenge, and his urge to Revenge brought in downfall not only of ' his family but entire Denmark.
. 9 While studying the play through movie, which approach do you find more applicable to the play? Why? Give reasons with illustrations.
9》Studying the play through movie, the Moral and Philosophical approach appeals more;because Hamlet was in conflict.. He wants to do something or he did not do that..
. 10 Which of the above mentioned approaches (in Pre-viewing task) appeals you more than other? Why? Give reasons.
10》The moral and Philosophical approach appeals more appropriate..
Thank You...
